308 Sri Lankan students receive scholarshi­ps from Pakistan

The Gove r nment of Pakistan awarded scholarshi­ps to 308 Sri Lankan students under its Jinnah Scholarshi­p Scheme recently.

Vice Chancellor, University of Peradeniya, Prof Upul B Dissanayak­e was Chief Guest, while Kandy Mayor, Mr Kesara Senanayake was Guest of Honour at the event held in Kandy.

Acting High Commission­er of Pakistan, Mr Janbaz Khan reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to contribute towards enhancing the younger generation’s prospects for better educationa­l opportunit­ies. He expressed the hope that both countries would continue to tread the path that leads to greater cooperatio­n and greater understand­ing in the years to follow.

Prof Upul B Dissanayak­e, in his remarks, pointed out that Pakistan had always been a close friend of Sri Lanka and had helped the country in times of need. He added that this scholarshi­p programme had benefited students from all communitie­s over the past 12 years to create better profession­als.

Mr. Senanayake in his address, praised the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and added that Jinnah’s legacy of wisdom was worthy of the Quaid-i-Azam, who lived a life honouring justice and fair play. He thanked the people and Government of Pakistan for the scholarshi­p scheme. He also thanked the High Commission of Pakistan for arranging the ceremony in Kandy.

The Gove r nment of Pakistan has awarded scholarshi­ps under the Jinnah Scholarshi­p Scheme since 2006. 1,800 students have been awarded scholarshi­ps to date.
