The world of business is changing. From the emerging global markets, to the impact of technology and the evolution of the modern workplace, things are looking decidedly different from even just ten years ago.

What hasn’t changed? Business is still tied to almost every aspect of modern human society – so business professionals will always be in demand.

Business, commerce and management degrees provide a great career foundation

Degrees in commerce and business have always been a popular choice for students – and it doesn’t take much to figure out why.

There are employment opportunities for commerce graduates in virtually every area of business and government globally. The list of potential careers is long: professional accountant, IT and systems professional, economist, financial planner, human resources manager, social and economic policy developer, international trade officer, marketing professional, and many more.

Plus, the skills learned in a business degree can be useful in a vast array of career pathways – so graduates can carve out their own unique place. Business degrees help to develop business acumen, financial litera- cy and analytical skills in ways that are valued by a broad range of potential employers, including not- forprofit organisations and government.

The appeal of specialists in a sea of generalists

Like in many industries, having generalist business skills is still a strong starting point for a career. But often the graduates that stand out in the crowd are those who have recognised their strengths and made the effort to specialise in a particular area. When it comes to business specialisations there are plenty of options – everything from finance or marketing to information systems or sport management.

Some of the ways undergraduate students can do this are through the major sequence they choose, opting to undertake a double degree, or by finding an internship with a related organisation. Postgraduate students have an even broader range of options when it comes to choosing a degree that focuses on their area of interest and will help them reach the next level in their career.
