Be Healthy, Stay Healthy with Maliban

-

Diana was diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes since her mid thirties’. Since then it has been a long and hard journey for her with drugs and diet control. It became so much worse after she changed jobs and started working for the entertainment industry where everyone seemed to be munching something or the other all the time and each time she was offered snacks by her colleagues she had to refuse which made her feel sad as it was a reminder she was a patient.

Then quite by chance she came across a perfect solution – a sugar free biscuit by Maliban. She could carry it in her handbag and munch along with the others. Despite being labeled as sugar free, it had a sweet taste and even her work colleagues who picked from her packet to munch thought it tasted great. But since Diana was also cautious she decided to read more about the product and found that it had been proven to have a low glycemic load via research done at Sri Jayawardenepura University. Further research on the sweetener substitute maltitol in the biscuit revealed that it causes sweetness close to that of sugar, but with not as many calories that helped her as a diabetic patient. An extra benefit of maltitol that she came across during her research was that it wouldn’t cause cavities or tooth decay similar to sugar or even some other sweeteners as to which reason they were also used in chewing gum, mouth paste and toothpaste. But she continues to be careful as not to have three biscuits at one time and most often stretches out her three biscuits up until lunch time.

But there were days when Diana got tired of munching the same biscuit and she wanted a change. Her colleagues who were also very much health conscious themselves introduced to her the Maliban Real Bran Cracker.

Her friends had read a research article about the biscuitconducted by a Professor attached to the University of Sri Jayawardenepura in Sri Lanka which had been published in a peer reviewed journal and presented at the 1st International Congress on Food Technology in Turkey in 2010.

The research showed that the Maliban Real Bran Cracker has a low glycemic index, which meant that it was slowly digested, absorbed and metabolized and caused a lower and slower rise in blood glucose that gives time for the body to clear the glucose from the body without undue increase in insulin. which isideal for diabetic patients such as Diana and also her health conscious friends.

The glycemic index, or GI, measures how a carbohydrate-containing food raises blood glucose. Foods are ranked based on how they compare to a reference food — either glucose or white bread.A food with a high GI raises blood glucose more than a food with a medium or low GI and the Maliban bran cracker according to the professors research which she did with

Glucose as the reference food, fell into the medium category.

There is substantial scientific evidence to support that low GI foods are beneficial for the prevention and treatment of a number of chronic diseases. Low GI diet also directly or indirectly influences many physiological processes which are relevant to health and performance, including physical activity, cognitive function, appetite regulation and energy balance. Eating low GI carbohydrate foods produces a gradual rise in blood glucose/sugar levels. This helps to avoid extreme swings in blood glucose/sugar levels and attain better diabetes control in the long run.

When Kelum first started working out at the gym due to the persistence of his friends, he was so exhausted at the end of each session that he just wanted to give up. But he knew that his BMI was way out of control and that he needed exercise to get back into shape. His lethargy and soreness of the body persisted even after a night’s sleep so much so that it even affected his performance at work the following day. His perception of workouts were that they were supposed to make you feel energized — not exhausted. Most of his colleagues at work were also his gym mates, but unlike him they seemed all perked up in the morning. Then one of his colleagues casually mentioned to him that he drank a glass ofMalibanVitagen every day in the night after his workout. Kelum decided to try it for a week and he experienced a marvelous difference. His lethargy and soreness of body literally evaporated.

Later his physician explained that depending on the length and intensity of a workout microscopic tears occur in the fiber and connective tissue of muscles. These tears fatigue the muscles and accumulate in large number. With proper rest and sufficient nutrients the muscles are slowly rebuilt over the following days. The essential amino acids in MalibanVitagen including Arginine which is a substrate for wound healing helped him enormously to recover at the beginning and continued to help him stay fit as he continued his workouts.

Whenever he made a mug for himself at home at night he got into the habit of making two extra mugs for his mother and father who were both in their sixties, and within days he saw how it helped them to become more active.

He was careful to find out more before he introduced the drink to them and found out that MalibanVitagen had no added sugar which was perfect as both his parents avoided excess sugar intake.

He also discovered that MalibanVitagen had a low glycemic index of 45 that had been tested and proven at a study conducted at the Sri Jayawardenepura University where the results were validated. Whenever they were down with flu or some illness, they recovered very fast as a glass of MalibanVitagen sustained them even though they would lose the appetite for normal food.

He was told by his personal physician that most health care professionals also recommend MalibanVitagen because it provides perfect nutritional support for reasons such as the need for a balanced diet for those who sometimes skip meals (like himself), as it provided essential nutrition and energy with added vitamins and also because it was a proven quality Australian product which was packed and marketed in Sri Lanka by Maliban.

As his knowledge of Maliban products increased Kelum introduced his mother who had recently been diagnosed as having low calcium levels and was on calcium supplements prescribed by her physician, toMaliban ‘Hi-Cal’ Gold as an alternative to her normal morning cup of tea. Hi Cal is High Calcium Non Fat Milk Powder enriched with Milk Calcium which can be easily absorbed by the human body. The Product is formulated to get the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of Calcium from one glass of Milk. That is ideal for Kelum’s mother as she had a special calcium need.

At the same time Kelum introduced his grandmother who was having high blood lipid levels and was taking statin drugs to Maliban Non Fat Milk Powder which just has 0.6(min) of Milk Fat. After about six monthswhen her lipid profile was tested again it was back to normal levels. She had previously tried most of the other nonfat milk powders in the market, and this was the most palatable to her. Currently Kelum’s whole family is happy and healthy.

The house of Maliban recently also introduced “YahaPosha” that offers both children and adults a new and healthy morning meal option or even to be consumed as an evening snack. It is ideal for busy families as it is a quick solution for a wholesome meal. Parents who are concerned about its authenticity can be satisfied that it is completely produced and marketed in Sri Lanka and is Free from chemicals, with no added flavours, colorings or preservatives ensuring a healthy diet for everyone. The product consists of nutritionally dense ingredients such as corn, soya, green gram, rice, vitamin and mineral premix. It also received the prestigious SLS certification from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution. The Yaha Posha manufacturing plant is based in Dambulla and all ingredients are locally sourced. Maliban proudly supports and encourages local farmers in their production to enhance and expand their yield to contribute further towards its products and nourish consumers.

All health conscious persons such as Kelum and his parents and people with special dietary and supplementary needs such as Diana can be assured that the House of Maliban has these range of products to suit the need of all. – Usha Perera
