“China can be a ‘big bully’, says top bureaucrat”

-

Reference to this story last week with the above headline, Export Development Board Chairperson Indira Malwatte has sent the following clarification:

“Having an understanding of the importance of China for Sri Lanka as a bilateral trading partner and the largest FDI provider to Sri Lanka, there was no intention whatsoever to disrespect China referring to China as a ‘big bully’. When negotiating trade agreements with larger countries, it is normal to consider the economic asymmetries and deal accordingly. Our trade negotiators are very capable of doing that, and getting the most appropriate deal for the country. The FTA with China was mentioned as a forthcoming contributing factor for development of trade between the two countries in the context of the NES to be launched shortly. The EDB respects our international partners whom EDB has an excellent working relationship.”

K.J. Weerasinghe, Chief Negotiator of the National Negotiations Committee of the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade, also sent the following statement:

“As Chairman of the negotiating team, I wish to inform you that we have not been bullied by China or any other Government during the FTA negotiations, and we will never allow any country to do so. I would also wish to add that negotiations are conducted with partner countries in a cordial atmosphere with constructive engagement.”
