- By M. Shamil Amit

The curtains of the ITF Junior Circuit week 2 tennis tournament came down yesterday with two finals each in the singles and doubles being concluded at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo.

Baoluo Zheng of China and Mei Ha Segawa of Japan emerged the winners in the boys and girl’s categories singles with the pair recording easy wins against two Indians V.M. Sandeep and Malikaa Marathe with the identical winning margin of two sets to nil in the three set final.

In the boys doubles final Matthew Garcia of Philippines and Tanapatt Nirundorn of Thailand who won the IT Junior Circuit Week 1 tournament retaining the title. They defeated the Korean pair Hyeoung Jin Kim and Sunwoo Kim.

The Indian players were unfortunate as they had to play second fiddle for the third time in the tournament. Their doubles pair in the girl’s category Archita Mahalwal and Akshaya Suresh went down to the pair of Chui Kei Leung of Hong Kong and Jessica Christa Wirahadipoernomo of Indonesia.

Thus the Indian girls had to be satisfied with the second slot for the second time having lost the final of the Week 1 tournament to the Chinese pair of Jiaqi Huang and Yijia Jiao whom they defeated in the semi final to qualify for the Week 2 doubles final.

The Sri Lankan players put in another dismal performance with Chathurya Nilaweera and Savit Weerasinghe being knocked out in the first round in the boys category while Alana Seneviratne, Anjalika Kurera and Natasha Munaweera being unable to proceed beyond the second round.

The ITF Junior Week 3 tennis tournament scheduled to be played from September 17 to 23 at the same venue.
