Scoring big
Nigel Richards dominated once again with a new rating of 2242 taking home the grand prize at the Sri Lanka International Open Scrabble Championship. Chollapat Itthiaree was the 1st runner-up followed by Sherwin Rodrigues. In 4th place was Thacha Koowirat (Thailand) while Goutham Jayaraman and Marlon Prudencio (Singapore) were placed 5th and 6th respectively. Sanjoy Guptha (India) was placed 7th with Tony Sim (Singapore), Udayan Grover (India) and Michael Tang (Singapore) completing the top 10.
Aabid Ismail was the highest placed Sri Lankan securing 13th place. Radinka Dissanayake (Bishop’s College) was 15th - the highest placed female player while Thirandi de Silva (Ladies’ College) was placed 16th.
The highest game score came from Yong Jian Rong of Singapore who scord 694 points while Michael Tang recorded the highest word score for “plinkers” with a massive 184 points.
Sri Lanka was well represented with current Under 18 world champion Aabid Ismail (Royal College), runner-up Janul De Silva (Royal College) and 8th placed Vignesh Pirapaharan (Lyceum International School – Panadura) who bested Nigel Richards with a score of 473-369.
