Joes go reeling to the spin of young Pasindu at Darley Road

- By M. Shamil Amit

An impressive match return of 7 for 20 by left arm spinner Pasindu Ushetti paved the way for Maris Stella to record a convincing outright win by 143 runs over St Joseph’s in their U19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at St Joseph’s ground in Darley Road yesterday.

The depleted St Joseph’s side playing the match sans their top four players who are undergoing training with the Sri Lanka U19 national side were no match for Maris Stella as they were shot out for low scores of 82 and 88.

It was right arm spinner Ravindu Fernando who laid the foundation for Maris Stella’s win with a five wicket haul in the first innings which helped his side bundle out the home team for 82 after Maris Stella had made a modest score of 182.

Ravindu apart from his bowling went on to crack a half ton in Maris Stella’s second innings when they were struggling on 23 for 4 at the end of the first day enabling them resuming from their overnight score to end their innings with a respectable score of 131.

St Joseph’s set a target of 232 runs for victory was not going to be anywhere near as they succumbed to the spin of Pasindu whilst losing wickets at regular intervals before being bowled out for another low score of 88 runs.

Pasindu with his seven wicket haul ended with a match bag of nine while Ravindu finished with an eight wicket haul.

Gonsalves College Pamunugama outclassed Sri Prangnananda MMV Raddoluwa by an innings and 64 runs in the Under 19 match which ended at Pamunugama yesterday.

The architects of their win were Duvindu Jayawardena and Praveen Sasanka who together combined along with Nisala Akash and Ashen Perera to bundle out Sri Prangnananda MMV for low scores of 58 and 68 after Gonsalves had made 190 in the first inning on day one.

Loyola College Negombo and Sri Palee Horana dominated proceedings against Seethawaka Central Avissawella and Ananda Sastralaya Kotte at the end of the second session of play in the matches played at Godigamuwa and Kotte.
