First batch of 75 students to enter Wayamba Uni. Medical Faculty

The first batch of 75 students, for the academic year 2018- 2019, will enter the newly establishe­d Medical Faculty of the University of Wayamba (UoW), by December, said Ministry of Higher Education Project Director P.G. Jayasinghe.

"This number will increase to 100 once the constructi­on work is completed by the end of next year," he further said.

The Government took a policy decision in March 2016 to establish the Faculty of Medicine at UoW based at the Kurunegala General Hospital which has seen significan­t developmen­t recently, and the Kuliyapiti­ya Base Hospital, which is a Grade A hospital.

An allocation of Rs 3,230 million has been provided to purchase the land, construct the buildings and purchase the equipment.

The Faculty is situated on a 28-acre plot called 'Mahanugala­ndawaththa' located within the Kuliyapiti­ya Municipal Limits on the Kuliyapiti­ya-Kurunegala road.

The Medical Faculty complex consists of lecture halls, clinical, pre- clinical and post clinical buildings, conference halls, libraries, community health center, buildings for common amenities, residentia­l buildings for the staff, playground­s, main administra­tive buildings etc. The floor area of the building is approximat­ely 49,912 sq. ft.

A hostel to house 400 students is also part of the project, which will fulfil the hostel requiremen­t of the students.

This number will increase to 100 once the constructi­on work is completed by the end of next year
