Student Experience with SLIIT

-

Vihangi Wijedasa - President Faculty of Business Student Council: Co-President

Following my Cambridge AdvancedLevel examinations, I began searching for private universities. I went to every university possible in Sri Lanka, and analysed the most important factors for myself, eventually identifying SLIIT as the number 1 private university in Sri Lanka with very high recognition.

As I also did lot of extra-curricular activities at school, I realised that with their wide range of activities, SLIIT had the best environment for me to continue with the same. SLIIT does not only offer the best degrees, but it also offers a variety of societies and clubs we can be a part of and magnificent events to experience.Additionally, one of the most important factors when searching for a university is the lecture panel, and I’m glad to say SLIIT Business School has one of the best. The convenient location was of course, another great advantage.

I am presently the Co- President of the Faculty of Business Students’ Community, and I’m incredibly privileged to be the first female Faculty President. It’s been 3 years since I’ve joined SLIIT, and I’m really proud of what I have achieved when looking back at these past years.

I joined SLIIT in 2016 in order to become a well-groomed undergraduate. Just after my A/Ls, like every other person with secondary education, my next aim was to continue my academics further and graduate with a well-recognised degree. My first and best choice was SLIIT, as it was also the closest university to my home. Moreover, after much investigation and research in comparison with other private universities, I was extremely satisfied with the university environment, the facilities offered, and the recognition of the degree ( UGC approved).

Initially I joined the IT Faculty, but then as I was drawn to the business field, decided to join the Business Faculty so I could pursue a career in Business Management.

I was actively involved in extra-curricular activities during my school days, and I was able to continue doing so during my university years as SLIIT is a university that provides its students with the perfect exposure and opportunities for us to enhance our soft and professional skills. I was fortunate to have enrolled in a university which promotes such a vital balance in all aspects.

From the time I was studying for my A/ Ls, I had aspirations to become an IT professional. SLIIT, being the No. 1 private higher education centre and the largest institution which awards IT degrees in Sri Lanka, seemed the best place to help pursue my dream. The degree is approved by the UGC and is well recognisedwithin the industry. Moreover, the outstanding academic staff and state-of-the-art infrastructure further convinced me to study here. I realised that if I am to stay on top of my game once I’m out in the industry, I needed to sharpen my leadership and communication skills all the while learning to collaborate with others; SLIIT with its well-established clubs and societies, sports and other on-going co-curricular activities, offered the best platforms for me to do so. Today, I serve as the President of the Student Interactive Society, the apex student body of the campus, and when looking back on the journey I’ve come since I joined SLIIT, it’s clear how much I’ve grown as an individual because of the opportunities SLIIT has provided me with- I’m very glad about the decision I made in choosing SLIIT to pursue my higher education.

I am a Cyber Security undergraduate. I was interested in the field ever since I started familiarising myself with Information Technology. I chose Cyber Security as my specialisation after completing my second academic year, and as a Cyber Security student, I have learnt a tremendous skill set through the subject content and been encouraged to enhance my professional skills by the academic staff involved. As such, I have participated in an array of activities during my university years.

Manura De Silva - President Faculty of Engineering Student Community

Following my Advanced Level examinations, I was not amongst the lucky crowd who got the opportunity to enter for an engineering course at related universities in the first sitting. Owing to my passion however in following a degree which would be helpful in strengthening my career, and a sense of urgency doing things as soon as I can, I right-away began looking for alternate options that would get me there in due time. And so, with the guidance of my family members, I started searching for private universities. This in turn led me to conduct a small study on the universities available here at home. After much research, SLIIT is what stood out to me as the best option when it came to a private university in Sri Lanka. I have found it to be great value- for- money, and it also seemed renowned throughout the industry as a blooming institution. Even though the engineering faculty was very young at that time, I was not afraid to choose this prestigious option, simply because of the name they had set for themselves before.

After joining SLIIT, I was highly pleased with the environment they had created, with extra- curricular and co- curricular activities for students to make their student life a well-balanced one. As a student who was part of most of the activities done at school myself, this was a very satisfying factor which made me feel relieved at my selection since there were so many platforms for me to improve my soft -skills in.

With time, even though it is one of the youngest engineering faculties in Sri Lanka, I am happy to say that we are privileged to be taught by the best lecturer panel we could find in any of the private universities out there. What is more, being one of the main private institutions which offers engineering courses in main fields such as Electrical and Electronics, Civil, Mechanical and Mechanical specialised in Mechatronics, SLIIT does not only offer the best degrees, but also a wide range of other opportunities where we can pursue further studies too. As a student who took part in the orientation course, everything has added value to our future.

I am currently the President of the Faculty of Engineering Students’ Community, and it is with great pleasure that I can say I have honoured my parents’ investment by choosing SLIIT. Looking back, everything I have done up till now because of this place, will truly help me throughout my life in becoming a successful individual serving our motherland.
