What the current law allows:

Under the current Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act:

there is no minimum age for marriage for girls the differenti­al applicatio­n of law to “sects”

causes confusion and discrimina­tion

there is no mandatory signature of the bride (Shafi sect) hence the lack of mandatory consent of the bride

marriage registrati­on is not compulsory

polygamy for men is allowed

no mandatory provision is given for payment of

mata’a (alimony)

divorce provisions are unequal for men and

women

dowry is allowed, an un-Islamic practice

women are prevented from being appointed as quazis, jurors, marriage registrars or to the Board of Quazi.
