What the current law allows:
Under the current Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act:
there is no minimum age for marriage for girls the differential application of law to “sects”
causes confusion and discrimination
there is no mandatory signature of the bride (Shafi sect) hence the lack of mandatory consent of the bride
marriage registration is not compulsory
polygamy for men is allowed
no mandatory provision is given for payment of
mata’a (alimony)
divorce provisions are unequal for men and
women
dowry is allowed, an un-Islamic practice
women are prevented from being appointed as quazis, jurors, marriage registrars or to the Board of Quazi.
