Royal beat Trinity at Hockey

Ro y a l College, Colombo won the annual Under- 19 TrinityRoy­al hockey encounter, beating their opponents 1- 0 at the Asgiriya Stadium under gloomy conditions. Royal led 1-0 at halftime.

With this win, they retained the J. C. A. Corea ( former Royal Principal) Trophy for yet another year. Royal continued their winning streak from 2008 and now lead the series with six wins to the Trinitians’ three.

G. Malshan scored the only goal of the game. The second half saw an evenly poised encounter and true to this narrative no one was able to score.

In the Under- 1 5 encounter, Trinity led for most of the game but Royal hit back in the last minute to carve out a 1- 1 draw. This match was played for the Paul Jeyaraj Trophy. Jeyaraj was a former hockey c o a ch and Vi c e Principal at Trinity College.

The Old Boys encounter ended 0- 0. This was played for the Late Col. Bertie Dias Trophy. Both school players in addition to the Old Boys displayed true sportsmans­hip on and off the field at this annual encounter. Mrs. Dias graced the occasion and handed out the trophies. The late Col. Berty Dias was a double internatio­nal in rugby and hockey.

Chief Guest, Trinity, Vice Principal, Shaw Wilson, an Old Royalist, and cricketer said “The encounter was played in the true spirit of sportsmans­hip by the present boys and old boys of both schools. The rains kept away the ground conditions were excellent. This annual event will bond players and students from both Institutio­ns.”
