Message of the Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Latvia
Dear Friends of Latvia ! I greet you on this most significant day for Latvia, as Latvia marks November 1918 was a significant turning point in the history of our country and nation. A hundred years ago, on November 18th, an independent Republic of Latvia was proclaimed in Riga
Latvia’s greatest resource is our people, those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, those who have dedicated their lives to the creation and maintenance of an independent state, create our present reality with the work they do on a daily basis, and, together with the new generation, are laying the foundation for our future.
Since regaining independence in 1991, Latvia has actively engaged not only in bilateral, but also multilateral cooperation in the region in such frameworks as, e. g., the Baltic Assembly, the Baltic Council of Ministers, Baltic and Nordic cooperation fora, the Council of the Baltic Sea States, the Northern Dimension, the Baltic Development Forum and E-Pine.
The dynamism of the Baltic Sea Region is well characterized both by the ability of those f r a m ewo rk s to evolve in response to global processes of political and economic integration, and by the emergence of new initiatives. A considerable momentum for the promotion of sustainable development in the region is the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region
Latvia has always supported ef fective, transparent and accountable inter national organizations in order to promote multilateral solutions to common problems. Membership in international organizations is also a tool for strengthening independence, security and sustainable development of Latvia.
. Latvia supports the commitment to improve working and living conditions enshrined in the European Pillar of Social Rights. It further works, a well- considered and balanced approach is needed in pursuit of rights and principles provided for in the pillar. It should be t a ke n into account that economic convergence among the Member States is a condition for a more successful resolution of the social dimension issues.
The relationship and trade between Sri Lanka and our country has constantly developed over the last years and we are further aiming to strengthen the ties between our two countries.
Please join me on this day in wishing both Sri Lanka and Latvia a bright, peaceful, prosperous and happyy future.
