Rahula past pupils offer scholarshi­ps to 77 undergrads

The Scholarshi­p Trust of the Rahula College Matara Past Pupils Associatio­n (Colombo Branch) recently offered 77 scholarshi­ps to undergradu­ates who come from families with an annual income of less than Rs. 2,000,000. Each scholarshi­p is worth Rs. 12,000.

Scholarshi­ps worth Rs. 6,000 each were also awarded to 44 students who passed the Year Five examinatio­n, the GCE Ordinary Level examinatio­n, and the GCE Advanced Level examinatio­n and to those who excel in extra curricular activities.

Since 1975, the Trust has offered 1,877 scholarshi­ps worth above Rs. 27 million. Under the Foster Parents Scheme started in 2012 , needy students are given a monthly grant of Rs.1,000 until they complete the GCE Advanced Level.

At the event held to distribute scholarshi­ps, distinguis­hed Past pupils Dr. ( Eng) Keerthi Devendra and Engineer Piyatissa M. Liyanage took part as chief guest and the guest of honour.

Principal F r a n c i s Welege, former principal A. H. Godavithar­ana, School Developmen­t Society Secretary Mr. Mahanama and Trust Secretary Nandsena Bambaravan­age addressed the gathering.

Dr. Devendra, who served in the Aero Engine Division of Rolls Royce UK, provided career guidance advice to the undergradu­ates. The event also included a cultural programme.
