Victorian shuttler Dilmi crowned Under-19 National champ

Dilmi Dias, the champion badminton player of Convent of Our Lady of Victories Moratuwa was crowned the Under- 19 National Badminton champion at the Junior National Championsh­ip 2018. She was also adjudged triple champion as she turned victorious in the Girls Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles events.

Dilmi was placed champion Singles event when she beat Hasini Ambalangod­a of Visakha Vidyalaya in the final. In this Under-19 Doubles event her partner was Anurangi Masakorala, and they beat Norodima and Anushi Ratnayake of Sirimavo B a n d a r a n ay a ke Balika Vidyalaya. For the Mixed Doubles her partner was Nadun Punchihewa of Richmond College.

Dilmi has been selected to represent the country at the World Junior Badminton Championsh­ip to be held in Canada in mid December and she hopes able to display her prowess at this event.

Her achievemen­ts have brought glory to her school and she is given all the support and encouragem­ent by the Principal Rev. Sr. Chamila Ann Fernando, Deputy Principal Rev. Sr. Umeshika Appuhamy, Prefect of Games and Vice Principal Sandya Fernando and the Teacher- in- Charge Nimalka Aponso. She is coached by Yukthi Perera.

At the same tournament Ashini Fernando reached the quarterfin­als of the Under- 17 Girls Singles event. Sehasna Lochani and Venuki Fernando achieved the pre-quarter-final round in the Under- 17 Singles and Doubles events respective­ly. The OLV shuttlers were adjudged second runners-up at the Junior Nationals after their impressive overall performanc­es in all age groups.

The tournament was organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Badminton Associatio­n.
