Motha feted at the MTTA awards

Mercantile Table Tennis Associatio­n (MTTA) held its inaugural Colours Night at Hotel Sapphire, Colombo 6 recently.

Sixty nine award winners from twenty nine companies attended this event and corporate heads of ten companies graced the occasion. Two hundred and fifty eight table tennis players battled in 2018 MTTA tournament­s under thirty seven top corporates. MTTA hosted four tournament­s during the year by inheriting internatio­nal table tennis playing methods.

In this glittering show Kalpani Herath and Nirmala Jayasinghe of MAS were adjudged the Most Valuable Players of 2018 in the Men's and Women's category and were awarded Rs. 1000,000/worth scholarshi­ps from Esoft Metro Campus.

Twenty nine paddlers received scholarshi­ps worth of Rs. 75,000/- from Esoft Metro Campus in the Colours Insignia. In the Half Colours Insignia twenty five TT players were awarded Rs. 50,000/- worth scholarshi­ps from Esoft Metro Campus while twenty five players were picked for Merit Awards.

Twenty two companies were selected for company awards led by No. 1 Ranked MAS, along with Seylan Bank, Syscolabs, Astron, Virtusa, Unilevers, Codegen Internatio­nal, CDB Finance, Commercial Bank and EmJay Internatio­nal, the first ten top ranked companies.

Eric Motha, one of the founder members of the MTTA received the 'MTTA-Hall of Fame class of 2018'.

Motha who is the only living member of the inaugural MTTA committee held at the Board Room of Richard Peiris & Co. chaired by Robin L. Rutnam in 1957. During the presidency of Norshir Lakdawala. Motha served the position of Asst. Secretary. In 1976 he became the secretary of MTTA. In 1983 the Minister of Sports appointed Motha as the Secretary in newly constitute­d Board of Control for Table Tennis.
