Tips to Selecting your ‘Dream University’

-

With O/ L exams on, the pressure to make a decision on what happens next is imminent. With the rise in popularity, many students opt to do a foundation/ pathway programme to a degree. This requires careful selection of a university, immediately.

Finding the right university which has the right fit is often a chal- lenge. With the booming education industry, the number of universities and institutes offering degree programmes is numerous. The below points will provide a starting point to the journey.

1. Credibility

While most private universities in Sri Lanka claim foreign affiliations from the ‘best’ university with the ‘highest ranking’, the credibility of the local partner is often questionable. Find out as to how old the local partner university is, who is on the management team, information on the lecture panel and facilities. Ensure that both the local university, as well as the foreign affiliation, has credibility and global acceptance.

2. Location and facilities

Life at university is often regarded as the best years in life. The fun, freedom, friends add value to the education received. Education is more than the happenings in the classroom. It is the holistic experience gained through being a part of clubs and societies and the soft skills gained such as leadership and team building.

The location of the university is paramount as it is a direct catalyst to the university culture. Identify if you want to study near your home, in another town or country. If educational migration is the dream, ensure that the university has the support system needed.

3. Cost and Finance

In education too, it is important to ‘cut the coat according to the cloth’. Identify your budget and match this with a university within your price range. While the facilities may differ as per the university and programme, monetary support is often within range. Find out as to what benefits the university has such as scholarships, subsidiaries and loan schemes.

This enables NCHS to offer a plethora of subjects to the students.

“As NCHS is an affiliated college you are basically students at Swinburne but you have the advantage of getting more help with your studies with one-on-one help from the excellent teaching staff and the smaller class rooms. This also means that you have full access to the blackboard online system from the start. All of this helps to make the transition as smooth as it can be” said Senal Ranaweera who transferred to Melbourne in order to complete his degree in International Business.

Tailor Made Study Programmes

At NCHS, students enjoy smaller classes, focused learning and oneon-one time with the teachers, giving every opportunity to succeed in studies.

The study programmes conducted at NCHS are identical to that of Swinburne, Australia and Cal State and follow the same curriculum, methods of teaching and evaluations, ensuring high quality and international standards. These identical industry- informed and industry- engaged study programmes at NCHS are specially designed to combine rigorous academic studies with practical knowledge essential for the academic and career success of the students.
