Sacred Latin Choral Mass at the restored Church of Mary, Negombo

-

The big bells of the beautifully restored Grand Street Church of Mary, Negombo will peal to announce the start of the sacred Latin Choral Mass on Sunday, February 24 at 6 p.m.

Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith together with several Bishops and Priests will concelebrate the solemn Eucharistic service in Latin except for the scripture readings. This celebration will emphasize the importance of youth in the liturgical life of the church as part of the “Year of the Youth” programme. Young people from several schools and parish choirs have come together to form the Negombo Pueri Cantores Choir that will lead the singing of chants, responses as well as the hymns and anthems.

This combined choir of 120 singers has been training for the past seven months under Francis D’Almeida and Nimal Victoria with the support of Very Rev. Fr. Ciswan de Croos and the parish priest Rev. Fr. Clement Rozairo.

The opposite right wing of the magnificent church will house the 100 member professional choristers from eleven choirs who will be supported by a 30 member orchestra of the Chamber Music Society of led by Lakshman Joseph De Saram. The choir under the guidance of Haasinee Halpé Andre and Soundarie David Rodrigo will be conducted by U.K. based conductor GregoryRose.

Arrangements are being made to accommodate a large congregation inside as well as outside the church with seats and multiple screens provided.
