Harischandra Walkathon 2019

-

‘Harischandra Walkathon 2019’, the 1st ever ‘ Green Walk’ in Negombo town will be on streets on the 16th of February 2019 with a view to promote the values of environmental protection & to promote the Green concept among the society.

Gampaha district is considered as the least tree-populated district in Sri Lanka today, against the prevailing high population & therefore, it adversely effects the environmental protection, faces a risk of producing clean air. The concept of Green walk comes to light in this context. The walkers will be distributing hundreds of fruit & other plants to increase the greenery in town & take steps to establish dustbins in public places to ensure a clean city. Spectators can also learn the importance of environmental protection through different educational presentations & distribution of leaflets spread over the walk. Arrangements will be made to establish three Herbal Gardens in parallel to the walk. Also, with the support of Negombo Municipal Council, trees will be planted on both sides of several main roads & within the Main Bus Terminal area itself.

A modern Waste Management System will be started soon within the school premises under the technical assistance from Waste Management Authority Western Province. The ultimate objective is to plant 10,000 trees within a year around Negombo.

The students, teachers (including ex- teachers), parents & past pupils will be walking to this theme on the 16th of Feb’ 2019 & organizers wish to extend an open invitation to all well wishers to join. The walk is organized by the ‘Harischandrians’ Vision 2030’, the school development arm of past pupils of Harischandra College, Negombo.
