I Wonder Why

- By Don Manu

Is there life after death?

What comes after this breath?

I ask as if I really care;

What happens to me when I cease to be

And no longer savour this air; Long after the worms have feasted my dust

(and turned to ashes all my lust) It’s a riddle that gets me nowhere Is there a man on the moon?

Can he grant me a boon?

When I’m down on my knees and sigh;

If there is, does it matter if, like a mad-hatter,

I raise up hand say hi:

For is it a crime to pin faith sublime On an icon far out in time

Will the sun relent to arise and set When it slinks near the western belt; Will our world cease to be, will eternity

Plod on regardless and reset Time from the start and the love in our heart

To evolve new without regret Does God exist?

Can I resist

The legend of Adam and Eve?

Or was Darwin right

When with insight

He mapped out the genetic sieve; And boldly opined to a sceptical mind The origins of man and his kind Did we come from somewhere That we are not aware,

Did we spawn in an alien clime; Does our ancestry hold

Origins untold

Wrapped in the shadow of time; Or from that first curse do we just burst

To propagate our seed for the worst
