13 Member team for Youth Athletics Championsh­ips in Hong Kong

The Athletics Associatio­n of Sri Lanka (AASL) will send a 13- member Youth Athletics team for the Third Asian Youth (Under-18) Athletic Championsh­ips to be held in Hong Kong from March 15-17.

The Championsh­ips conducted by the Asian Athletics Associatio­n will have Athletes from over 35 countries participat­ing. The Sri Lanka contingent will comprise 7 Boys and 6 Girls. The AASL is yet to decide on the captain of the team. The Team Manager cum Coach is Neville Rodrigo, who is also the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Associatio­n.

The Sri Lanka team will leave on March 13 and return on March 19.

Coach cum Manag e r Rodrigo stated that the team is currently in training and from next week they will attend residentia­l coaching in Colombo. He was optimistic about the talented young Athletes to win medals.

The Second edition of this event took place in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2017, when Sri Lanka won 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. Harsha Dissanayak­e won Silver in the 800metres (1.54.99 min). The Bronze was won by Navod Sankalpa in the 400metres Hurdles ( 53.86 seconds).
