Homemade gourmet treats for the four-legged kind

- By Sashini Rodrigo

Our dogs are our best friends, and we need to treat them like they are. That’s what founder of Pugzy’s Kitchen Krishani Balanayagam believes, and this concern for the well-being of dogs is reflected in what Pugzy’s Kitchen creates, which are tasty and highly nutritious homemade dog treats that are now beloved amongst local pet owners.

Krishani had one simple goal when she established her business back in 2016: to make the best treats and dog food that are not only tasty but beneficial to dogs. As a result of her dogs Puggy and Izzy’s recurring allergies and other ailments, she began her extensive research into pet nutrition, natural healthcare and holistic medicine for dogs.

Her research made her aware of the importance of a healthy diet and a stress-free environment for both dogs and people. She began formulating treats that were beneficial to their health and complemented their individualised diets to address their issues. Following Puggy’s complete recovery she was inspired to help other pets who suffer from conditions that are preventable, and Pugzy’s Kitchen (Puggy + Izzy = Pugzy’s) was born.

Pugzy’s Kitchen aims to create treats that are not only tasty but serve an overall purpose. Their menu includes a variety of dogfriendly products, such as dehydrated treats like Goat Femur Chews that promote good oral and emotional health, or bone broth to aid in digestive issues. It also includes fun treats like Tuna Fudge or Liver Brownies, or light snacks like Mutton Puffs that are great for sensitive tummies.

Their most popular items are the fully customisable ‘Pupcakes’, which are healthy, dog-friendly birthday cakes that give owners the wonderful option of celebrating the special moment with their pets.

“I am an advocate for fresh food made from human grade ingredients for our pets. The ‘one-bag-forall-pets’ policy does not make sense to me personally. Just like human beings, our pets have individual die- tary needs that need to be addressed.” says Krishani, reflecting on how the absence of healthy treats and food for dogs in the current market was also a major factor in her decision to start this venture.

With reports of dangerous additives, banned antibiotics and more risks, commercial dog treats aren’t always a safe bet. Pugzy’s Kitchen’s homemade natural treats made from 100% human grade ingredients, free from artificial colourings, flavourings and synthetic ingredients with no-added preservatives are a great option for dogs with
