Zonta: Marking 100 years of serving women with recognitio­n awards for non-Zontians

Zonta Internatio­nal Foundation celebrates a century of service this year, a century of working towards empowering women all around the world.

In honour of this landmark anniversar­y, the Zonta Internatio­nal Foundation is awarding Recognitio­n Awards for non-Zontians who have made significan­t contributi­ons towards the empowermen­t of women.

This ‘once in a century award’ that’s a recognitio­n given internatio­nally is open to all individual­s or organizati­ons to apply for or to be nominated for. Nomination­s close on April 30, 2019.

Since its establishm­ent over 50 years ago as the Zonta Club 1 of Colombo, the pioneering club in Sri Lanka has awarded many scholarshi­ps and conducted empowermen­t programmes to provide greater opportunit­ies and uplift the skills of Sri Lankan women. “What the club is trying to do is to empower women because we don’t believe in only giving them money,” said Shahnaz Nathani, Governor of District 25 for Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Zonta in Sri Lanka has also expanded to Zonta Club Colombo II, III, IV and Kandy. It has chartered clubs for young people as well; the Z club at the Asian Internatio­nal School and a common club for students from all schools along with the Golden Z club in Jaffna and at the Medical Faculty in Colombo regardless of gender.

Presentati­on of the Centennial Recognitio­n Award will take place at the Zonta District Conference to be held from October 4-6 at the Galle Face Hotel Colombo.
