Inaugural R. Senathi Rajah Memorial Oration on “Internatio­nal Financial Centres”

The first memorial oration of the R. Senathi Rajah Memorial Trust is due to be delivered by Prof. M. Sornarajah, CJ Koh Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore on Friday, April 5 at 5.30 p.m. at the Lotus Room -Committee Room ‘B’- BMICH, Colombo.

The oration, organized under the auspices of the Trust is on the topic – “Internatio­nal Financial Centres and Specialize­d Legal Regimes: Is Sri Lanka Ready?” The oration is held to commemorat­e the multifacet­ed contributi­on of the late R. Senathi Rajah whose name is synonymous with the developmen­t of corporate, commercial and financial law in Sri Lanka, the Trust said in a media release.

Mr. Senathi Rajah was acknowledg­ed as one of the preeminent profession­als in many fields of law. He was recognized as an expert in Banking and Finance, Capital Markets, Corporate and Commercial Law, Insurance Law, Labour and Employment Law, Litigation and Arbitratio­n, Mergers and Acquisitio­ns, Taxation and Probate. His clients and interlocut­ors included leading national and internatio­nal institutio­ns.

His more than 50 years of service to Messrs. Julius and Creasy led to the firm becoming one of the most sought after legal advisory services in the country. Most of the lawyers who came under his tutelage and supervisio­n now adorn exalted positions in the corporate legal sector.

The inaugural oration is organised by the Trustee of the “R. Senathi Rajah Memorial Trust”, Jacey Trust Services (Pvt) Ltd.

The focus of Prof. Sornarajah’s academic and practicing career was in public internatio­nal law. He has published several books with the Cambridge and Oxford University Presses. He has been counsel or arbitrator in many disputes involving states and multinatio­nal corporatio­ns in the oil, constructi­on and services sectors. He has sat on tribunals of the Internatio­nal Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (Washington), the Permanent Court of Arbitratio­n at the Hague and the Singapore Internatio­nal Arbitratio­n Centre.
