Sumedha College, Gampaha, opens new Indoor Stadium

-

Sumedha College, Gampaha, a Government approved private school, recently constructed an indoor stadium for Badminton, Volleyball, Netball and Mountain Climbing, to be opened on April 5, for its students. Plans are underway for a Squash court by August 2019 as well.

The school authorities assert they built the stadium because extra-curricular activities are of equal importance to the academic curriculum, in creating a healthy and balanced citizen.

The school follows a technology driven initiative for development, and hopes to teach Electric and Hybrid Auto Mobile Technology and to build a Tissue Culture Lab to suppor t its existing Agriculture unit. Additionally, the school possesses a Robotics and Drone Technology unit, Computer Hardware unit, Mechanical Engineering unit, Civil Engineering unit and an Electrical and Electronics unit. It also houses 4 Smart Classrooms.

The School, which has a current enrollment of over 3,500 students and 200 teachers, began in 1997, under the name Visakha International Pre- School, with just 10 Kindergarten students. The Pre-School still goes by the same name and has almost 600 children.

The school acquired the existing Sumedha Maha Vidyalaya established in 1956, and formally opened the College in 2003.

Despite the Government’s plan to scrap the Grade 5 Scholarship exam, Sumedha College gives great prominence to the exam, with 175 students out of 389 passing the exam last year.
