Cinema on divided and united Germany

-

A 1995 German television film directed by Frank Beyer and based on the book by Erich Loest, ‘Nikolaikirche’ will be screened at 7 pm on April 12 at the Goethe Hall, in Colombo.

The screening is a part of the film series “Film Macht Geschichte”, shown from March 22 to May 3 in the Goethe Hall. The selected films in the series focus on the topic of failed states, the “failed states”. The term originated in the early 90s and referred directly to the changes and upheavals in the former “Eastern Bloc.” Within the film series, the breakdown of the GDR is described in particular.

Directed by Frank Bayer, the film concentrates on the last years of East Germany and tells the story of a family that is torn between the protest movement and the Stasi. The name of the film derives from the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, which was the starting point for the Monday demonstrations.
