Something to knock your socks off or maybe actually keep them on, MAZE is a new brand on the market bringing something cool and exciting for your feet. A Sri Lankan venture founded by Prabath Seneviratne, MAZE aims to change the game with their high-quality funky socks. During an interview with Prabath he gave us a little insight into how the brand came to be last year.
Having been a marketer with 13 years of experience working with top local and multinational brands across three countries, Prabath always had a dream of becoming his own boss and owning a business. Thus when faced with an opportunity he couldn’t refuse, Prabath took it by storm and MAZE came to be.
“Socks have always fascinated me as they are one of the rare pieces of clothes that everyone can be a bit more avant- garde than other items of clothing. Sadly socks don’t get much attention in Sri Lanka, and those who love quality socks buy them from overseas,” shares Prabath on why he choose socks as his brand product.
Quickly realising the need to start a brand that encourages individuality in its own way, MAZE started producing high-quality socks ideal for the tropical weather.
Focusing on the designs of the socks, Prabath had always wanted to wear socks that are truly Sri Lankan. “Why not Jambu or Tuk Tuks on our socks and express our individuality as Sri Lankans - that’s what most of our designs are all about - things which are quintessentially Sri Lankan on a sock!” he eagerly tells us.
The MAZE team draws inspiration from everything they see,hear, feel and how they live. With Sri Lanka being a vibrant country rich with culture, colours, people and experiences, it is quite easy to interweave the Sri Lankan influence into the sock designs. MAZE initially launched with 25 designs and added on new designs twice a year, the next set is et to be out shortly. Using high quality combed cotton with a consistent needle count of 144 for optimum moisture control, MAZE socks took almost a year to reach their self-imposed high standards of becoming the perfect sock for tropical weather. MAZE is quickly becoming a social media sensation with a lot of Sri Lankans showing off their cool socks as they get on with their day to day lives.
“The response exceeded our wildest dreams. Colourful socks are no longer just for children and eccentrics: professionals and students are wearing them across Sri Lanka,” Prabath revealed.
The MAZE team aims to strengthen the distribution in Sri Lanka and consequently go on to develop new markets in terms of their future. As a personal goal, Prabath would love to see them grow to the stage where they can give back to society and work closely with charities. They’ve already started working on a CSR campaign to help the local community.
