Home baked goodness

- By Joshua Surendraraj

A generous slice of cake is guaranteed to lift your spirits no matter the day. This week we rounded up a few home bakers, who are slowly making a name for themselves in the industry.

Icing on the top

When it came to baking, Niluki Hemalge always found that it had a calming effect on her. She finds it soothing knowing that something as simple as adding sprinkles to a cake can enhance how you’re feeling.

Niluki is the face behind ‘Icing on the top’ and has always been passionate about baking and trying out new dishes. She’d love reading recipes and following foodies that made her try out new things.

Aside from being a home baker, Niluki is also a mum of three. She tells us her kids are her helpers and at times, they come up with ideas of what to add when it comes to the cake decorations.

When it comes to her ingredients, Niluki has always used the best. This helped her to gain the customer’s trust and deliver a product of quality without compromising the taste of it.

She focuses more on birthday cakes for children and any other type of novelty cakes too. Her other products include cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, finger food, savoury and homemade beverages such as fresh punch, iced coffee and fruit juices etc.

Niluki finds joy in being a baking mum. But on the other hand, she adds that “in a world built for men by men, we are always going to have to work a little extra to prove ourselves.” She explains that when it comes to baking, timing makes everything perfect. So she sticks to her own rules and that helps her to deliver her products on time.

‘KeKi by Sue’

Sueli De Zylva, the face behind ‘KeKi by Sue’ is a full time mom who is also a successful banker. Baking began as a hobby for her and even as a young child she’d find herself in the kitchen, helping her grandma.

“Baking is love made edible.” And Sueli has always stuck by this principle. She uses the best ingredients and the freshest produce when it comes to her products and treats each customer as family.

Sueli started baking as a business back in 2017. She had posted a few pictures on social media and sooner one of her closest friends asked her to bake a cake for her daughter. “This first step soon turned into a successful small home based business.”

Her products are made to order and range from simple cupcakes and brownies to customized cakes and decorated sugar cookies. Sueli’s bestselling baked goodies are her customized cakes, specifically the vanilla cake and decorated sugar cookies.

She tells us her limitation is her customer’s imagination. As a home baker, Sueli faces many challenges. But, what keeps her going is simply the passion for food. She also finds satisfaction in the intricate designs on her cakes, which her customers often request for. This usually takes her hours and sometimes days to complete. But, she loves the fact that no two cakes will look alike.

Above all though, Sueli loves the feedback and comments she receives from her customers. “It is so satisfying to put in all that effort to make so many happy at the end of it all,” she tells us.

The Sugar Factory

24 year old Dilusha Soysa is the owner of ‘The Sugar Factory’, which she and her husband started in November last year. Dilusha has always had a soft spot for desserts and sweets. And ever since she was a teenager, she’d love to watch YouTube tutorials on baked goods.

She started baking for her family functions and sooner, after polishing her skills, she ventured out to start her own business.

Today, her bestselling products are the classic chocolate biscuit pudding and the fudge brownies. Some of the other items on the menu are her sugar cookies, oatmeal cookies, cupcakes, pavlovas and meringue pops. “We also have a very delicious chocolate biscuit pudding without any egg, butter or icing sugar.”

Dilusha will be introducing a few savoury items to her menu in the upcoming months, which will be available for kids’ parties and small functions. She can be reached on https://www.facebook.com/TheSugar-Factory

Sugar Mummy’s

Cooking food for her friends and family has always been Shanee Preena’s passion. She had always wanted to share her love through food and this resulted in ‘Sugar Mummy’s’ which is a home based catering service.

Put simply, ‘Sugar Mummy’s’ is all about love. And though the home baking market can be quite competitive, Shanee tries to promote her products through taste and the feelings. Sugar Mummy’s best sellers are the decorated cakes and sweets, which are supplied for birthdays and celebrations. Apart from this Shanee has also received good responses for her dinner menu and desserts as well.
