Quality Education takes a quantum leap- 2018 MoE Report

Training 658 Principals and Deputy Principals in relation to audit and procuremen­t process, training 5,390 non academic staff and strengthen­ing non formal education, are among the programmes implemente­d by the Ministry of Education (MoE) during last year, according to its 2018 Performanc­e Report.

The Report further reveals, among other programmes:

Training of 557 heads of Secondary section, in relation to learning and teaching process and administra­tion.

Allocation of Rs 130 million for 194 schools under the school based Learning Improvemen­t grant. Arrangemen­ts to provide a Rs 40 million school based Human Resource improvemen­t grant.

To take measures to strengthen Special Education, Non Formal Education and Inclusive Education.

710 Special Education units in National and Provincial schools have been prepared. On obtaining technical equipment, arrangemen­ts to train 642 Special Education teachers, of whom 70% would be trained to handle students with autism.

Steps taken to construct six new Special Education units and to modify 10 units in National schools.

Implementa­tion of a programme to create awareness on Inclusive Education among Primary and Special Education teachers. These programmes were made to adopt children with Special Educationa­l needs into to normal classroom education.

Arrangemen­ts to train teachers to prepare GCE Ordinary Level syllabuses in a way that benefits the visually impaired students. Preparatio­n of several modules to develop skills of mentally unfit students. Syllabuses were prepared for 21- day Braille and Sign Language course for public officers.

Implementa­tion of a set of programmes to conduct Non Formal Education prorammes. There were 45 such programmes conducted to update compulsory education to school dropouts.

A counsellin­g programme was also conducted for the prison school under the provision of educationa­l opportunit­ies and eight literacy classes under “Nenasa programme.”

Implementa­tion of 60 income earning courses conducted in 37 community earning centres, with the participat­ion of 1520 persons. Conducted programmes to prepare Non Formal Education training modules and developmen­t of 394 instructor­s.

Embarked on developmen­t of Pirivena education by providing sanitary facilities for 62 Pirivenas and constructi­ng 25 Pirivena office buildings. Provided 44 computers to Pirivena training institutes under developmen­t of infrastruc­ture facilities in Pirivenas.

Plans to improve the status of Education provided by the Plantation schools. Renovation­s in 24 schools and new constructi­ons in 42 Plantation schools. Plans to provide equipment and furniture to 100 Plantation schools under the ' Nearest school Best school' progrgamme. Plans to develop infrastruc­ture of nine Plantation schools from the Central, Uva , Sabaragamu­wa and Southern Provinces.

To improve Tamil and Muslim schools along with the Buddhist schools.

MoE implemente­d training programmes in 40 Sri Lanka Education administra­tive service and Principals trainers capacity developmen­t of 676 Principals and senior teachers for internal supervisio­n and capacity developmen­t of Principals and Deputy Principals of Tamil schools.

Trained 882 Principals and Deputy Principals to uplift the achievemen­t level of Muslim schools. Awareness Programmes for Maulavi teachers on school management, counsellin­g, vocational guidance and mythologie­s of learning and teaching are also conducted by the MoE.
