The Avenue: A boost to local market with a modern vibe

- By Sashini Rodrigo

The chic new addition to Colombo’s fine dining scene has opened its doors with a flourish — The Avenue promises a unique dining experience that encompasses a variety of international cuisines to present an extensive menu that uses only the freshest Sri Lankan produce.

The restaurant has already made itself known through a series of launches this month, which saw many of Colombo’s elite dropping in to sample its delicious bites and impressive drinks.

Conveniently situated at Alfred House Gardens, the charmingly cosy yet unmistakably refined space has a modern cafe vibe to it but with a versatility that makes it perfect for any occasion. Whether it’s a casual catch up with friends, a family outing, a romantic dinner for two, or even a business meeting, The Avenue has a space that works. The outdoor space can also be used to host events and parties.

Conceptualised and managed by Charitha Sham, Vindika Oshan Jayasundara and Shanika Nanayakkara - who collectively have over 10 years of experience in the restaurant and catering industry - the restaurant is designed to have something for everybody, in terms of both space and food.

The Avenue maintains a farm to table philosophy, which puts value in what is available locally and aims to support the local agricultural industry in a sustainable manner. Head Chef and partner Charitha, who has experience working in a Michelin star restaurant, says this is something the local culinary scene has been greatly missing.

“We try to promote the local market,” Charitha says of their initiative. “We export the real products, but Sri Lankans don’t get a chance to try it.”

Charitha tells us that their aim is to maintain high standards in the quality of their dishes, and put real thought and care into the culinary experiences they provide. Every detail matters, from the freshness of locally grown micro greens to the internal temperatures and gradation of meat and tuna. Everything is done to international standards.

The fusion menu is as big on flavours as it is on variety, offering everything from soups, salads and starters to Asian-inspired dishes, tacos and pastas. Their biggest draw, of course, is their meat selection, whether you’re in the mood for a hefty steak or a juicy burger.

Overall, The Avenue promises an expertly prepared gastronomic experience that is certainly worth a visit.
