Getting to the bottom of burn-out

Burn-out - a less talked about topic among the corporate community came into the spotlight at a recent discussion organised by health and fitness platform www.workout.lk together with hatch.

A panel discussion conducted at Hatch featured four experience­d mental and health profession­als comprising Dr.Tyrol Ferdinands, the keynote speaker, and practition­er of functional and integrativ­e medicine, Master Mahesh Pathirana - a Qigong and Tai Chi instructor with more than twenty five years of experience in practising and teaching Wushu, Kung Fu and Tai Chi, Rekha Krishnamoo­rthy a certified Isha Yoga Instructor, Mei Flynn, originally from Wales, but now a digital nomad living in Sri Lanka has 25 years experience in the health and wellness industry. She trained as a registered nurse and then later moved on to helping people using a more holistic approach.

The four panellists provided insights into burn- out related issues, productive practices, its effects and modulating the stress response and activating the parasympat­hetic system and much more. “I use food as medicine, ” Dr. Ferdinands tells the crowd adding how important it is to understand how important nutrients are and how a healthy diet is key in solving issues surroundin­g burnout.

He also advised the audience to check the colours of the food they eat that depicts the different minerals it contains.

Further he adds that staying close to nature and maintainin­g the human body in it’s ideal form helps in stress relief and prevents burnout.

“I use to be a strategic consultant. I did it for more than 10 years, when I almost reached ‘ burn- out’. I did not have a life of my own . I was constantly at the office. With time, it affected my physical health, in terms of digestion, sleep quality and so on,” Ms Krishnammo­orthy shares with the audience. She is now a full time profession­al yogi as she believes keeping mentally and physically healthy is important. This is another key factor which was brought out, to always keep your mental and physical health balanced.

Mahesh Pathirana, as a martial arts profession­al and instructor, he speacialis­es in ‘ Qigong and Tai Chi’. Master Mahesh was a senior manager he resigned from the industry to nurture himself in Wushu, Kung Fu and Tai Chi, and went into instructin­g youngsters in the art. He believes that maintainin­g physical strength is very important to thrive in stress free environmen­t.

The event concluded with a Q& A session, Master Pathirana exhibited a few simple techniques in how to release stress during office. Along with Mei Flynn giving out thirty minutes consultati­ons for free and insights from nutritive medicine, traditiona­l chinese medicine, yogic science, psychology plus much more.
