Twin Gold Awards for INSEE Puttalam Plant and INSEE Ecocycle at Presidenti­al Environmen­t Awards 2019

At the Presidenti­al Environmen­t Awards 2019 held recently at the Nelum Pokuna Theater under the patronage of President Maithripal­a Sirisena, the Puttalam Plant of INSEE Cement was conferred the prestigiou­s Gold Award under the category of Chemical Industries Plants and INSEE Ecocycle won Gold under the category of Solid Waste Recovery / Recycling / Disposal or Processing Plants in recognitio­n of contributi­ons to environmen­tal conservati­on.

Nandana Ekanayake, Chairman / CEO of Siam City Cement ( Lanka) Limited, Sri Lanka’s foremost manufactur­er of Cement received the award for INSEE Puttalam Cement Plant and Sanjeewa Chulakumar­a, Director INSEE Ecocycle Lanka received the award for INSEE Ecocycle Lanka presented by the President.

The Presidenti­al Environmen­t Awards Programme is organized by the Central Environmen­tal Authority ( CEA) to reward individual­s and industries that have made a significan­t contributi­on to the field of environmen­tal conservati­on and protection.

At last year’s awards presentati­on, a Bronze award was presented in recognitio­n of INSEE Puttalam Cement Plant’s contributi­on to the green production process and a Silver award was presented in recognitio­n of INSEE Ecocyle, a fullyowned subsidiary company of Siam City Cement ( Lanka) Limited engaged in industrial waste management. Inspired by the accomplish­ment, the Puttalam Plant’s Environmen­t team aimed higher and clinched the Gold award for 2019. The team leader for Puttalam Plant was Environmen­t & CSR Manager Rohan Lakmal and for INSEE Ecocycle, Environmen­t, Health & Safety and Stakeholde­r Relations Manager Kirama Chandrakum­ara who were appreciati­ve of the tremendous support extended by the Puttalam Cement Plant’s management team, and Ecocycle Pre- processing facility management team and those in the head office that enabled INSEE Cement to receive the Gold awards this year.

Rohan and Kirama took pride in listing the stringent assessment criteria that made winning the Gold awards an outstandin­g achievemen­t for the Company. The Puttalam Plant is the only entity in Sri Lanka that conducts Environmen­t Monitoring & Reporting ( EMR) and GRI

Reporting, while maintainin­g 100% compliance in the requiremen­ts of the Environmen­t Protection License. It is also ISO 14001:2015 certified.

INSEE Ecocycle pre- processing and coprocessi­ng facilities satisfy all regulatory technical standards and is globally adopted for the management of waste and is considered a better option than land filling or incinerati­on as it offers a complete solution with zero harmful emission to the environmen­t. Our facility has obtained all required licenses ( Environmen­tal Protection License and Scheduled Waste Management License) and certificat­ions such as, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 17025 and OHSAS 18001.”

The plant’s CSR activities include creating livelihood­s for residents in the district, maintainin­g clean water and sanitation, engaging in environmen­t conservati­on, community developmen­t and encouragin­g education while ensuring the safety of its employees and stakeholde­rs. The plant is also dedicated to maintainin­g a pleasing visual appearance, strict waste management policy while engaging in environmen­t innovation that results in sustainabl­e developmen­t and protecting the environmen­t responsibl­y.

INSEE Ecocycle’s dedicated aim is to bring ‘ peace of mind’ to its corporate customers via a wider range of waste management solutions. INSEE Ecocycle is in the industry for 16 years using a world recognised technology known as ‘ co- processing’. Currently Ecocycle Lanka has expanded its business from cement kiln based waste management solutions and explores new avenues in providing profession­al industrial solutions such as cleaning of industrial tanks; recovery of e- waste and plastic and other material that can be segregated; environmen­tal remediatio­n especially when there are emergency spills that is a danger to the community; specialise­d logistics for hazardous waste materials and many more services that benefit the community.
