Diabetes, once considered a disease of the developed world, has become a worldwide pandemic. There is an alarming increase of diabetes in Sri Lanka, where a Colombo urban study shows that 27.1 per cent of the Colombo urban population suffers from diabetes.

As the insurer of the nation SLIC said it understands the gravity of the issue and took a leap forward by introducing a dedicated health insurance cover to diabetes patients, a media release from the company said.

In the Sri Lankan context, according to the stat i s t i c s released by International Federation of Diabetes in 2017, 1.1 million adults ( 20- 79) are suffering from diabetes. Adults with undiagnosed diabetes ( 20- 79) number 428,000 and mean diabetes- related expenditure per person ( 20- 79) with diabetes is US$184.8 (approximately Rs. 34,000). Diabetes related- deaths ( 20- 79 years) in Sri Lanka are 15,534.

While the statistics reflect the severity of the status of the most common non communicable disease, insurers are reluctant to provide insurance cover for people with diabetes.
