Shehan and Asela honoured with top awards

Shehan Kariyawasa­m and Asela Madushan won the Sportsman of the Year awards for 2017 and 2018 at the ‘ Colours Awards Ceremony’ of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, which was themed ‘Josephian Conquerors’. The event was held on November 1 at the Rev. Fr. Dr. Stanley Abeysekera Auditorium amidst a large and distinguis­hed gathering.

The Sportsman of the year Award was awarded t o Sheshan Kariyawasa­m for the year 2017 for his excellent performanc­es in athletics. He represente­d Sri Lanka at the 6th Youth Commonweal­th Games held in Bahamas. He was placed fourth in the 110metre Hurdles and he was ranked seventh in Asia and 51st in the World.

Asela Madushan was the Sportsman of the year, for the year 2018. He represente­d the Sri Lanka Football team that toured Korea and Japan and also donned the national jersey at the SAFF Championsh­ip held in Bangladesh.

Six students were awarded with the ‘Josephian Blue for the Year 2017’ for cricket, rugby, football and athletics and an addition of 10 students were awarded the ‘Josephian Blue for the 2018’ for rugby, athletics, football, scouting, basketball and cadetting.

A total number of 275 students were awarded ‘Certificat­e of Merits’ and 143 students were awarded ‘Colours’ for the years 2017 and 2018.

Cuthbert Charles, the Chief Guest for the occasion, was welcomed by Rev. Fr. Ranjith Andradi, the Rector of St. Joseph’s College. Cuthbert Charles represente­d St. Joseph’s in Rugby from 1957 to 1962 and captained the side in 1961.
