Nadumi Wijerathne - a Student of CfPS Law School obtained a First Class honours LL.B ( Bachelor of Laws) degree from the University of London at the 2019 examinatio­ns.

Among thousands of students around the world who sat the University of London LL.B exams in 2019, only 8 students including Nedumi obtained a first class.

We interviewe­d Mr. Nanda Muruttettu­wegama- Joint Managing Director of the CfPS.

Q What can you say about your law school?

This is the 27th year of our law school. The CfPS is the iconic leader of the private legal education in this country. We have produced over 5,000 lawyers through our various courses. We are also a Registered Centre of the University of London. Our institutio­n is situated at a very convenient location in Colombo- 07 and we have the latest teaching facilities including library facilities.

Q Why – University of London (UOL)?

The University of London is one of the most prestigiou­s and top ranked Universiti­es in the world and in the UK.

Q Why – University of London LL.B?

The UOL LL.B degree represents the gold standard of the undergradu­ate law degrees in the world. The University of London LL.B is endorsed by the Quality Assurance Agency of the UK.

Q Can a student obtain the University of London LL.B without going to England?

Yes. You can study in Sri Lanka at one of the Recognised Teaching

Institutio­ns of the University of London such as the CfPS Law School and obtain the University of London LL.B.

Q What does the University of London LL.B Certificat­e say about the awarding institutio­n and the place of study?

The University of London LL.B degree certificat­e does not mention the place or county of study or the institutio­n where the student studied – it simply says the degree is awarded by the University of London.

Q Who are your lecturers?

Nedumi Wijerathne who got a first class last year generously attributes her success to the eminent lecture panel of CfPS Law School which consists of legal practition­ers and legal academics possessing both local and UK academic and profession­al qualificat­ions.

Q What are your results?

In addition to a first class we have produced several second class upper division graduates. Our final year pass percentage is approximat­ely 93%.

Q What are the entry qualificat­ions for the UOL LL.B?

If you have A/L’s with a “C” pass for English at the O/L you can do the degree through the standard entry route (three years) and if you have a degree on any subject in any language medium that is acceptable to the University of London you can do the degree through the graduate entry route (2 years only). If you do not have the A/L but you have a “B” pass or English and 3 “C” passes at the O/L you can enter the programme through the Certificat­e of Higher Education in Common law route which is equivalent to the first year of the LL.B degree.

Q How do I practice as a lawyer after obtaining the UOL LL.B?

University of London LL.B graduates are eligible to sit for the Sri Lanka Law College exams without having to pass the most competitiv­e law college entrance examinatio­n. Students can complete these exams in one year after completing the UOL LL.B degree.

Q Apart from practicing in courts what are the other career options available to a lawyer in Sri Lanka?

Practicing in courts is only one of the many career opportunit­ies available to a lawyer. A lawyer can join a company as a legal officer and he can also attest deeds. A lawyer can also join the judiciary as a judge or be a law lecturer.

Q What are the special features of your UOL LL.B Course?

We teach using the latest teaching techniques and technologi­es which includes teaching through a highly developed student portal. We give a detailed note for every subject. We also have Online Assignment­s, Take Home Assignment­s, Open Book Examinatio­ns and Mock examinatio­ns for students to assess their progress from time to time.

Q How much does the UOL LL.B with the CfPS cost?

If you enter through the standard entry or Certificat­e in Higher education in Common law route the total investment for the entire

course including what you pay the University of London will be around Rs. 1.7 Million and if you are already a graduate your total investment will be around Rs 1.3 Million.

Q Do you award Scholarshi­ps?

Have you heard of any institutio­n that awards scholarshi­ps worth over 22 Million each year. That institutio­n is the CfPS. If you can convince us that you are exceptiona­l, we are prepared to go to the extent of awarding even a 100% scholarshi­p.

Q How do I apply for a scholarshi­p? Q Can I meet the representa­tives of the University of London?
