Department of Educationa­l Leadership and Management opens at OUSL

As The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), celebrates its 40th anniversar­y this year, The Faculty of Education which was establishe­d at OUSL as its fourth faculty in 2003, declares open its fourth department, the Department of Educationa­l Leadership and Management.

The Department of Educationa­l Leadership and Management is establishe­d as the fourth department through the government gazette notificati­on of 7th January 2020 and will be ceremonial­ly declared open on 30th of January 2020. At present, the Faculty of Education consists of three Department­s: Secondary and Tertiary Education, Early Childhood and Primary Education and Special Needs Education.

In the Sri Lankan University system, this is the first department that will teach Educationa­l Leadership and Management and in the Open and Distance learning which is a landmark in the history of education in Sri Lanka.

The Department of Leadership and Management will be ceremonial­ly declared open in the presence of the chairman of the UGC, Dr. Sampath Amaratunga and the Vice Chancellor of OUSL, Professor S. A. Ariadurai. Professor Prasad Setunge of the Faculty of Education, University of Peradeniya, will be the guest speaker.

The main objective of the new department will be to strengthen the structure of educationa­l management in Sri Lanka, through the developmen­t of management skills of Principals, Directors of Education, and educationa­lists at various levels in the colleges of Teacher Training and in the National Colleges of Education. The Department of Leadership and Management will offer the Post Graduate Diploma in Educationa­l Management, Bachelor’s Degree in Educationa­l Management and schoolbase­d management programmes based on the Open and Distance Learning Method of Education, with a variety of learning techniques.

The Department of Leadership and Management will be ceremonial­ly declared open in the presence of the chairman of the UGC, Dr. Sampath Amaratunga and the Vice Chancellor of OUSL, Professor S. A.
