Victorian shuttler emerge Open Women’s Singles champion

Dilmi Dias, the former Games Captain of Convent of Our Lady of Victories, Moratuwa secured the Championsh­ip in the Open Women’s Singles for the first time at the 67th Nationals and 37th Junior Nationals Badminton Championsh­ip 2019 held at the Sugathadas­a Indoor Stadium. She also emerged champion in Under-19 Girls’ Singles and Under-19 Girls’ Doubles events.

Dilmi beat Achini Rathnasiri a past Visakhian in the Open Women’s Singles event and Jananuwani de Alwis of Visakha Vidyalaya in the Under-19 Girls’ Singles event. In the Under-19 Doubles her partner was Anurangi Masakorala of Southland College and they beat Nisali Balasooriy­a and Oshini Pilapitiya of Musaeus College.

Thirty team players of Convent of Our Lady of Victories, Moratuwa participat­ed at the above tournament and emerged Overall Girls’ runners-up at the Junior Nationals. Ashini Fernando emerged second runner-up in the Under-17 Girls’ Singles. Senuri Fernando and Amesha de Silva emerged second runner-up in the Under-19 Girls’ Doubles. Indeewari Nawalage became the quarter-finalist in the Under19 Girls’ Singles and Sehansa Lochani and Venuki Fernando reached the quarter-finals in Under-17 Girls’ Doubles.

The Victorian shuttlers, who brought glory to their school, are coached by Yukthi Perera. The Principal, Rev. Sr. Chamila Ann Fernando, Deputy Principal, Rev. Sr. Umeshika Gayani and the Teacher-in-Charge, Nimalka Aponso render their fullest co-operation to develop the game of badminton in school.
