School ranking system to be introduced

The Education Ministry will introduce a ranking system for schools throughout the country in a bid to reduce the competition to gain admission to schools, a senior Ministry official said.

The rankings will be based on results achieved by the students at the Grade 5 Scholarship examination, GCE (O/L) and GCE (A/L) and will be updated after every examination, but the rankings would be released annually.

“We believe that though there are schools which achieve good results, some of the parents rush to admit their children to popular schools without considering the results achieved by the school,” the official explained.

He said that, as a result, there was an unnecessary rush to get children admitted to the traditional popular schools, as they are unaware that there are better schools which produce better results.

A committee has been appointed to prepare the ranking system which is likely to be ready by the end of the year. The ranking system is to be developed on the number of students who pass the examination as well as marks achieved in each of the subjects. They will take into consideration the number of students who fail the examinations.

The ranking system is also expected to help improve other schools as more parents will be interested in admitting their children to these schools. (DW)
