CCC Maroons win U-12 Academy Cricket title

CCC School of Cricket ‘Maroons’ recorded a 5-wicket victory over Sanath Jayasuriya Cricket Academy in the finals of the Under-12 Inter-Academy Cricket Tournament played at the Ananda Sasthralay­a grounds in Kotte.

CCC ‘Maroons ’ will receive the glittering Chans Sports Challenge Shield at the prize giving ceremony that will take place after the completion of Under-15 and Under-17 tournament­s to be played later.

Sanath Jayasuriya CA batting first totalled 142 off 33 overs. Rachintha de Silva top scored with a steady 38 while Lelum Samaranaya­ke and Shenon Wijeratne contribute­d with 25 and 16 runs respective­ly. It was CCC ‘Maroons’ off spinner Thewindu Wewalwala who had the batsmen in check maintainin­g a nagging length. He was the most successful bowler to claim 4 for 33. Suhas Ranawana, with 2 for 26, lent a good support to Wewalwala in keeping the batters quiet from the other end.

Thewindu Wewalwala, returned as a batsman, with a well-timed 33 runs to guide CCC ‘Maroons’ to reach the victory target of 142 in 31.3 overs. Rezon Soloman and Thehan Bitar too batted well for the winners.

The champion team comprised Chanul Athale

(Captain), Omith Rathnayake, Ranuga Wathuhewa, Thehan Bitar, Rusadu Silva, Rezon Solaman, Janith Pandithara­thna, Tharun Ariyarathn­a, Thewindu Wewalwala, Suhas Ranawana, Mayusha Rathnayake, Thiwiru Ranasinghe, Wiruja Jayathilak­a and Thewan Kanduparaa­rachchi.

On their way to the finals Sanath Jayasuriya CA beat Mighty CAS by 92 runs while CCC ‘Maroons’ scored a 6-wicket win over Kingfisher­s CA.
