Waste recovery initiative at Abans group head office For a more environmentally-friendly Sri Lanka

-

In the light of recent events in Sri Lanka and around the world, the need for better and more environmental-friendly practices is a pressing concern that needs to be addressed immediately. Natural calamities and man-made disasters are on the rise, along with an alarming increase in global warming and climate change. Sri Lanka is specifically facing the current imminent issue of waste management which has caused heavy negative impacts on the country. Therefore, Abans Group took action in the form of a sustainable waste management initiative which was conducted on the 6th and 7th of March 2020 at the Abans Head Office in Kollupitiya.

A noteworthy address was made by Mrs. Saroshi Dubash at the event, highlighting the importance of understanding global warming and their causes, and tackling the climate change concerns head-on from within the workplaces. She further went on to state, “As a fully Sri Lankan conglomerate, we are committed to keep enhancing the tomorrow for every Sri Lankan. In enhanced tomorrow, we envision the sustainability of the environment of our precious island nation.” The initiative is aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Employees of Abans were requested to hand over discarded electronic and electrical appliances cluttering their houses to Cleantech (Pvt) Ltd, the environmental solutions providing sister company under the Abans Group of Companies. Pre-processing of the collected items within the guidance of both national and international standards will take place.

The hazardous waste will be exported to state-of-the-art, reputed foreign facilities for the correct treatment and disposal. Alongside this initiative was the implementation of the 3R principles – Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – as a measure to encourage employees to avoid bringing single use plastics into the Abans head office. Single use plastics are the result of an increasingly disposable-based lifestyle built on fast convenience and are major sources of garbage pileups.

This initiative is just the start of Abans Group’s sustainable waste management initiatives that will be continued across the country through its branches of over 400, as an ongoing measure to protect the environment for a better tomorrow.
