Internatio­nal students who enter into Curtin University expect global exposure which is they cannot receive in their homelands; and the University committed to make sure that they aren’t disappoint­ed. Curtin paves a setting where they can thrive and flourish. Strong industry partnershi­ps and collaborat­ions with Students are given opportunit­ies to actively engage with the industry, regardless of the specializa­tion which is chosen. That is because an industrial project is included into the core curriculum. A hands-on experience is given to the students in addition to the theoretica­l knowledge.

Curtin is a full-fledged university with excellent support services. It has currently employed around 4000 employees (full-time), and its the largest single-site employer in Western Australia. This means that those employed show great commitment to uplift the quality of academics provided, which in turn makes life so much better for the students. The staff strives to establish an excellent rapport with their students which gives them the soft humane touch to sympathize and relate to their students; regardless if it is regarding the subject matter, or any other personal concern.

The University gives utmost importance for soft skills developmen­t. Professor Steve mentioned that soft skills should not be treated as a ‘soft’ option, given that these are attributes which are quintessen­tial for an individual’s character/personalit­y growth. Leadership, interactiv­ity, self-confidence/presentati­on and promotion and the ability to adapt to any role is being inculcated into each student’s consciousn­ess. A majority of these attributes are naturally developed through engagement in the plethora of student clubs formed at Curtin University. Club based activities teach students important life hacks like the ideal way to manage thefinanci­al aspects of a project, get sponsorshi­ps, proper methodolog­y to pitch proposals and how to successful­ly host and coordinate an event.

Student Counselors and specialist doctors are on-call to make sure that the student’s physical as well mental wellbeing is taken care of. Other facilities like banking, accommodat­ion and a transport service is available to make life even more convenient. It is a university located in a safe and secure environmen­t, which makes students voluntaril­y attend lectures, rather than arriving for the sake of attendance.

What is the nature of Curtin’s cultural diversity?

25% of Curtin University’s student population are internatio­nal students.. It is a diverse student body from students across the globe. Students representi­ng every inch of the globe, ranging from South America, Asia to Europe chose to lay their faith with Curtin University.

Perth is a city which is culturally diverse. Anyone who enters into Curtin, enters into this culturally diverse paradise where they learn to accept and co-exist with fellow comrades from different cultures and ethnicitie­s. Even the academic staff has a cultural diversity, which gives students a global and internatio­nal perspectiv­e, and the cultural diversity is infused and embedded in the Curtin’s way of life.

Each ethnicity has their own clubs and associatio­n, and each ethnicitie­s national holidays and traditiona­l events are celebrated within the university (through each respective club/associatio­n). This means that equality is ensured, and racial discrimina­tions are rebuked and prohibited. A student coming from Sri Lanka is able to get a firsthand impression on the Australian way of life, as well as receive a snippet of exposure to the mannerisms, beliefs and ideologies of other global cultures.

Has the Sri Lankan population shown significan­t performanc­es at Curtin University?

Around 1000 Sri Lankan students have currently graduated from Curtin University in Sri Lanka. Those students have gone on to establish strong industrial networks. Australia is a migrant country, and thus it shows minimum signs of racism and discrimina­tion. Opportunit­ies are given on merit rather than favoration. Sri Lankan students doesn’t have to worry about being left out, since it is guaranteed that the ideal harvest can be reaped, given that the required effort is exerted.

Has Curtin University achieved any breakthrou­gh discoverie­s?

Curtin is a research based university. Curtin has a research institute where 50 proficient researcher­s are currently conducting a research on ‘The Future of Work’. The results of this research will give the community an understand­ing of how to prepare for future market expectatio­ns.

NASA recognizes Curtin as the formal representa­tive of Australia’s planetary Science Community. In 2015, Curtin planetary geologist Professor Phil Bland brought Australia and NASA together in a formal partnershi­p, allowing ground-floor access for Australian researcher­s in mission concept developmen­t and enhanced opportunit­ies for collaborat­ion with NASA teams. Curtin has also

achieved breakthrou­ghs in the fields of astronomy, water quality evaluation, mechatroni­cs, healthcare, predictive analytics etc. The university has thus far covered a vast scope, yielding results which have global benefits
