Lankan sentenced to prison in Singapore for overstayin­g visa tests positive for COVID-19

A 21 year old Sri Lankan who recently visited Singapore and was sentenced for overstayin­g his visa has tested positive for COVID -19 while in prison, a foreign media reported.

The youth who had arrived on January 10 had been found guilty for overstayin­g his visa on June 12 and was sentenced to prison for four weeks and is to be caned three times for the offence of overstayin­g.

He was tested positive for COVID- 19 on June 18 while in segregatio­n.

“The Sri Lankan was first tested negative at the point of admission, showed no symptoms; therefore he does not require medical treatment” the Singaporea­n prison service was quoted as saying.

However the Sri Lankan was detected to have COVID – 19 on June 18 while undergoing group isolation. There were two other i nmat e s admitted with him.

Th e prison authority noted that the Sri Lankan inmate would be subjected to a medical review to assess his medical situation.
