Fire engulfs rare sanctuary

A fire that spread in the Annavilundawa Ramza sanctuary on Friday in the Puttalam district has destroyed about 20 acres.

This sanctuary is classified by environmentalists as a hub for endemic and migratory birds.

Environmentalists have often highlighted the need to protect this sanctuary for its rich biodiversity. Brigadier Senaka Kasturi Mudalige was involved in the operation to douse the fire.
