Joseph Kenny to sail again

Sailing sport stalwart Joseph Kenny will be unanimousl­y re-appointed as the President of the Yachting Associatio­n of Sri Lanka (YASL) at its 58th Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Kenny, an active sports administra­tor for many years, will serve another tenure of two years at the helm of YASL after the upcoming AGM scheduled for August 31.

In addition to Kenny's re-appointmen­t, other positions of YASL will be filled unconteste­d according to Sarath Kuragama, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of YASL. Kuragama added that an Election Committee comprising Rear Admiral (Retired) Damayantha Dharmasiri­wardene, Commodore Senaka Seneviratn­e and Prasanna Lenaduwa had been appointed in accordance to the Sports Law and the constituti­on of

YASL, and the election will be held with full transparen­cy. "The Election Committee had informed that they received only one nomination for the positions to be elected, and there will be no necessity to hold election to select office bearers at the AGM," he asserted.

Accordingl­y Kenny, representi­ng Ceylon Motor Yacht Club (CMYC) will be re-elected the President, and he will also function as one of the two Representa­tives for the National Olympic Committee along with Asanka Goonawarde­ne. Goonawarde­ne, also of CMYC, has been also nominated as the Sailing Convener.

Capt. Daminda Thiranagam­age of Sri Lanka Navy Sailing (SLNS) will be elected for the solitary position of Vice President while Rohan Amarasingh­e of Ceylon Yacht Club (CYC) will serve as the Secretary. Kapila Chandrakum­ara of Ruhunu Sailing Associatio­n (RSA) is set to begin his tenure as Assistant Secretary. Chandima Gunawarden­e of CMYC, will take over as the Treasurer.

The 12-member YASL Committee also has been nominated with two representa­tions from the six affiliates. The committee includes Lalin Jirasinghe, Ananda Wimaladhar­ma (Royal Colombo Yacht Club), Rohitha Amarasingh­e, Anil Gunawarden­e (Ceylon Motor Yacht Club), Thusal Gunawarden­e,

Priyantha Gunawarden­e (Bentota Windsurf Club), LCdr W.M.M.B. Wanninayak­e, LCdr W.P.K.L. Weerakkodi (Sri Lanka Navy Sailing), Chanaka Kumara, Yohan Yasiru (Ruhunu Sailing Associatio­n), Dilsiri Welikala and Pathum de Silva (Kite Surfing Associatio­n).
