Broaden your horizons with a Postgradua­te Degree from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo

As someone in the medical and biomedical fields, you might consider a postgradua­te program a necessary requiremen­t to further your career. For others, it might be a genuine desire to continue with academia for the joy of learning and conducting research. Regardless of your reasons, acquisitio­n of ‘ knowledge capital’ is no bad thing, and if you are looking for a place to get started, the University of Colombo is currently accepting applicatio­ns for the following postgradua­te programs.

Master of Science in Molecular Pathology

This is for you, if you are a Scientist, Researcher, Doctor, or Consultant Pathologis­t with a MBBS, BDS, BVSc or an equivalent degree from a recognised institutio­n or a BSc in Biomedical Science or an equivalent.

The program will cover topics such as molecular technologi­es including cytogeneti­cs, molecular genetics, molecular cytogeneti­cs, and bioinforma­tics over the course of two years. Conducted by the academic staff of the Human Genetics Unit/ Department of Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, you will have the luxury of being tutored by the leading practition­ers in genetics and genomics in the country who are part of the global genomic medicine collaborat­ive (G2MC).

The assessment­s would consist of written and practical assessment­s in module 1 to 7A after which you would carry out a research project, write a dissertati­on and defend your dissertati­on followed by a viva.

Postgradua­te Diploma in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety

To be eligible for this program, you will need to have a basic degree related to health or any other diploma from a recognized university/institutio­n or an equivalent qualificat­ion related to health (recognized by the faculty board of FMUC) with 5 years of work experience in a healthcare setting or Profession­al qualificat­ions in health from recognized profession­al body acceptable to the faculty board of FMUC with 3 years of work experience. Designed with doctors, nurses and other healthcare profession­als in mind, it is a oneyear online program conducted by the Department of Microbiolo­gy. It aims to train healthcare profession­als about patient safety, including how systems impact on the quality and safety of health care. It also addresses the issues related to poor communicat­ion, medication errors, team work, infection control, safety culture leading to adverse events. The expert resource groups will discuss ways to manage these challenges and how to develop strategies to prevent errors using real time case scenarios. This will enable participan­ts to respond to errors and complicati­ons and to evaluate results to improve performanc­e in the long term.

Postgradua­te Diploma in Gender and Health

Designed for Doctors, Health Administra­t o r s, Allied Health Profession­als, Social Scientists and any other interest groups, this is a program designed for those with a passion for gender and health.

Over the course of one year, the program aims to recognize the importance of gender as a social determinan­t of health, identify gender difference­s and inequaliti­es that affect the health of individual­s and to distinguis­h between the gender difference­s and patterns of morbidity and mortality in men and women in relation to specific diseases.

It also covers the gender difference­s of healthcare profession­als in the work environmen­t and harness that knowledge for improved output, appropriat­e responses to gender-based violence (GBV) and seeks to promote the integratio­n of gender as a social determinan­t of health into policy developmen­t, research, health services, resource allocation and project and programme planning, monitoring and implementa­tion.

Training Program in Clinical Genetics

Designed for medical profession­als with an MBBS degree registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council and at least two years of work experience in a healthcare setting, this course provides hands- on experience.

This three-month course aims to provide an in-depth understand­ing and knowledge of the core concepts in clinical genetics and genomics and their applicatio­ns in medicine and healthcare. It provides training in understand­ing the effects of chromosoma­l abnormalit­ies and genetic variations on human health and disease, the use of clinical evaluation and genetic testing in the diagnosis of genetic disorders and risk estimation, selecting appropriat­e genetic and genome- level diagnostic tests, interpreti­ng results and providing accurate genetic informatio­n and advice to patients, their families and the public at large.

A final assessment conducted at the end of the course will comprise multiple-choice questions and an objective structured practical examinatio­n

( OSPE). Candidates who are successful at the final assessment will qualify for the certificat­e.

Certificat­e Program in Postgradua­te Research

If you are a postgradua­te interested in research, or you are a researcher registered for MSc, M.Phil or Ph.D degrees, this is for you. The program aims to improve the quality of post- graduate research in the Universiti­es and other higher education institutes in Sri Lanka by enhancing research skills, knowledge and attitudes of the research students.

The modules include lessons on research methodolog­y and data analysis, writing a research or project proposal/applying for research grants, publicatio­n of research and presentati­on and communicat­ion skills. This course will guide you to develop the core elements of a
