The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce recently held the Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability (BCCS) Award 2020, for the seventeenth consecutive year. The event is held annually with the objective of recognising the importance of Corporate Sustainability in Sri Lanka, and encouraging businesses to adopt best practices to create goods and services, using processes and systems that ensure efficient use of resources, minimize pollution of the environment, are safe and healthy for workers, consumers and communities and enhance the well-being of all communities, in line with achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year being a challenging year with quite a lot of new experience due to the pandemic; the awards also focused on emergency preparedness, resilience and stakeholder management during the pandemic and also contingency plans of the corporates. Also, the entire process was managed using a digital platform.

Companies that compete in the Ceylon Chamber’s annual BCCS Award believe that it serves a greater purpose beyond the accolade itself, acting as a measure of their year- on- year progress, as well a performance evaluation alongside peers in their respective industries.

BCCS Awards are judged in two categories, distinguished by the annual turnover: those companies with a turnover above Rs. 15bn are judged in Category A, and those below are judged in Category B. This is to ensure that the BCCS Award is a holistic competition, encouraging the noble efforts of corporates both big and small to interact responsibly with its stakeholders.

Applications each year are evaluated by Sri Lanka’s best thought leaders of sustainability, and the sustainability title awarded by the country’s apex business chamber is an accolade worth competing for. Continuing its efforts to take sustainability to grassroots level, the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce encourages business enterprises to apply for BCCS Awards each year and join a journey of sustainable practice.

The recent Best Corporate Citizen Award ceremony was held at the Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, on 29th March 2021.
