Karuwalagaswewa school in need of urgent repairs

The decision to re- open schools with 200 students was taken mainly to ensure education to students who do not benefit from distant learning and online education through computers, mobile phones and educational programmes on television.

Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya at Aluthgama in Karuwalagaswewa has 223 students, from low income rural families. Many of these students have received little or no education for more than a year, due to their school being closed.

“Parents came to me urging me to tell education authorities to re- open the school. They are poor and cannot afford even a smartphone. But we are in need of hand washing facilities and the school has been neglected for many months. The toilets and sick room need a lot of repairing and refurbishing,” the school’s vice principal, Ven. Maanewe Pannarama thero said.
