Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs – An Experience like no other

-

In a rapidly evolving world in which major new developments take place in the blink of an eye, a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of the international arena is immensely beneficial for all individuals. Following the Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs offered by the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI)is the ideal opportunity for any individual to gain extensive knowledge about the field of international relations.

When I first set foot in the BIDTI, I was a little fledgling who had just left school and was still months away from starting university. The knowledge I had pertaining to the field of diplomacy was practically non-existent. Fortunately, we were blessed with an extremely conscientious panel of lecturers who were well-aware of the fact that they were catering to a diverse group of students from different educational and professional backgrounds.

Starting at the very basics of diplomacy, we went on to explore more complex realms like International Organisations, International Law (which I particularly enjoyed) and contemporary affairs. Our lectures were graced by the presence of esteemed speakers ranging from experienced diplomats to heads of organisations, all of whom disseminated knowledge and skills that are invaluable, not just for future diplomats, but to anyone with a passion for international affairs.

All the speakers were passionate about their relevant fields, and they always invited queries and comments, and lively discussions would ensue. The participants of this diploma hailed from diverse fields of work and study - students, members of the armed forces, employees of the private and public sectors, were all brought under one roof, and this diversity made for a rich and exciting learning experience.

To this day, the aroma of Nescafé transports me back to my time at the BIDTI, when coffee breaks would turn into enthusiastic discussions with my friends, until the administrative staff would peek out andusher us back into the lecture. The Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs was never limited sitting and listening to our lecturers drone on – we experienced team building activities, group presentations, and one fine day, we even got hands-on experience on hosting a dinner and a reception!Being a part of this amazing journey, I developed a passion for diplomacy and international affairs which eventually led me to picking International Relations as one of my subjects at university.

This diploma has been intricately designed with the utmost care to ensure that its participants would receive an in-depth and all-encompassing knowledge in the field of diplomacy. Ms. Pamela Deen’squiet and unwavering strength, and determination to give allher students the best exposure possible, has brought this learning experience to new and amazing heights.

I started the diploma as a complete amateur in the field of diplomacy, but I walked away with a wealth of knowledge and confidence that has benefitted me in numerous ways, and will continue to do so for years to come.

In our maiden lecture of the diploma, we were told, “Diplomats are made, not born”. The BIDTI, in its Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs, has truly substantiated these words. Deviating from conventional teaching and learning methods, this course brings its participants both theoretical knowledge, and a practitioner’s perspective.

For aspiring diplomats as well as individuals who are passionate in the field of diplomacy, this will be a truly unique and life-altering learning experience, and will inculcate in them the potential to take on the world.
