National University of Singapore crowned winners of ALSINC 2021

-

APIIT Law School International Negotiation Competition (ALSINC) 2021 was held from September 17-19 and hosted 15 teams, with ten teams from foreign universities and five teams from Sri Lanka.

The competition was organised by the Moot, Debate, and Mock Mediation Society of APIIT Law School with Ex Curia International as their official knowledge partner.

The student-run initiative was organised virtually and was the first Sri Lankan negotiation competition held internationally.

The competition provided every participant with the general information for all cases to be negotiated and provided a set of confidential information to the teams an hour prior to the round.

The team of expert assessors for all the competition rounds were globally renowned mediators, negotiators and lawyers, such as Pascal Comvalius, an IMI certified mediator and certified hostage negotiator in Holland who judges several international negotiation and mediation competitions.

The University of Oslo and the National University of Singapore faced off in the grand finals, which was live streamed on Facebook. The

National University of Singapore triumphantly took home the trophy as the winners of ALSINC 2021.

The competition aims to promote peaceful alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in Sri Lanka and internationally by providing students with the skills necessary to negotiate disputes and secure their client’s interests.

The working committee of ALSINC organised several workshops and networking events in partnership with Ex Curia International and renowned negotiators to educate the young negotiators on different strategies and clarify their doubts on the process.

The inspiration behind this competition is to take the first step as a Sri Lankan higher education institution to consistently host an international competition, with a panel of experts recognised at an international level to judge and provide feedback to the participants, allowing them to improve and develop their advocacy skills.

The programme granted local law students the opportunity to connect with international judges and network with their fellow peers across the globe. This also allows them to practice the use of alternative dispute resolution methods.
