US$ 400 million of ADB funds successful­ly allocated for secondary education: Education Minister

ADB to hold 2022 annual meeting in Sri Lanka

Education Minister Dinesh Gunawarden­a has expressed the Government’s appreciati­on to the Asian Developmen­t Bank (ADB) for its funding for local educationa­l programmes.

During a recent meeting with ADB Director General Kenichi Yokoyama at the Education Ministry recently, Mr Gunawarden­a said ADB funds amounting to US$ 400 million have been effectivel­y used for the developmen­t of secondary education sectors.

Mr Gunawarden­a said that the funding has been useful for the developmen­t of science, technology, mathematic­s and commerce streams in schools.

He also said allocation­s have been used to implement educationa­l reforms at national and provincial level and to improve training of teachers and principals.

The ADB Director General said Sri Lanka had received the highest funding.

Gunawarden­a said it was an honour for Sri Lanka to host the 55th ADB Annual Meeting next year.

A Memorandum of

Understand­ing for the event has been signed between the ADB and Treasury Secretary S. R. Attygalle on behalf of the Sri Lankan Government.

The ADB will hold its annual meeting under the theme ‘positionin­g a climate-resilient green economy for the postCOVID-19 world.’

The conference will be attended by 3,000-5,000 delegates from member countries, including finance ministers, central bank governors, company executives and internatio­nal bank representa­tives and the ADB board of governors.

It is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka from May 2-5, next year.
