The Higher Education System in France

Home to some of the oldest universiti­es in existence, France has a diverse system of education that sets it apart from many counterpar­ts. They follow the License- MasterDoct­orate (LMD) system of education, based on European Credits Transfer System (ECTS) that facilitate­s students with transferab­le credits. The French higher education system is characteri­sed by the coexistenc­e of several types of institutio­ns. There are: universiti­es; Grands établissem­ents publics (major public institutio­ns); Grandes écoles (elite schools); administra­tive public institutio­ns; private higher institutio­ns or schools.

The Elite Grande Écoles – The Elite Graduate Schools, France

Almost 20% of internatio­nal students study at The Grandes Écoles in France, which are public or private higher education institutio­ns recognised by the state. Although many Catholic institutio­ns have adopted the title of ‘university, an old French law states that no private institutio­n can call itself a “University”. The Grandes Écoles are highly selective and often referred to as the Ivy Leagues of France.
